I see lots of talk around what is and isn’t patina in an old truck, but I think this should be the line of demarcation. This truck is a Dodge d200, I believe of early 1970s vintage. In true Jalop fashion is is a single cab long bed model, likely the most common configuration sold in its day, and it is currently sitting in the front yard a a house with a good chunk of property on a small lake, bed full of mulch. It is nearing 50 years old and still putting in a hard day’s work.

The patina on this truck shows its age but does not show outright neglect. The paint has faded but the colors are visible. There is mildew on the lower portion where is sat in overgrown weeds but it has not eaten away the paint. There are small spots of rust but no rot. A few dings and scratches present, the sign of a life lived to the fullest (I certainly have my scars as well).

But this truck lives on, and though it does not move as easily as it once did it is good enough to be used. The chrome on the mirrors still shines and the windshield is in tact. No parts are missing. M aybe not old enough or popular enough to be a classic but it soldiers on. This truck has been in that yard for as long as I’ve lived in the area and I will be sad to ever see it go.

I agree. That is in remarkable condition to have been kept outside and actually used. Probably many layers of paint under there.

Patina is like a well worn toy that is still playable. Not broken, just broken in.

Nice, I briefly k new a guy that had an old Apache that color in similar condition. I’m not really a truck guy but it was magnificent.

This is part of why trucks have always held their value better than cars, they don't become obsolete over time. As long as it can still haul stuff in the bed, it's still just as functional as the day it left the factory. In places that don't use road salt, you'll still find 40 or 50 year old pickups at construction sites or used by landscaping crews

That is a great old truck. I think it’s newer than that, but it’s hard to tell because the body of these was more or less unchanged for 20 years. I think that grill is more late 70's. Not that it matters, your point still stands and is spot on.

These D-series trucks are greatly underappreciated. They're absolutely the best bargain in "classic" trucks these days. Their cabs are significantly roomier than their contemporary Ford and GM trucks.

It looked like the range was ‘71-80 or so for that cab shape and fuel fill, and the colors scream early ‘70s but who knows really, I’ve never stood next to it just seen it from a small distance.  Just like seeing it used.

It’s not patina, it’s just a bad paint job.

I refuse to buy into this ‘patina’ BS like it’s somehow a good thing.

And nowadays you can spend $75,000 on an ultra-luxury quad cab for luxury that barely even touches German entry-level luxury cars.

Truck tax!
